In light of activating the activities of the "Sustainable Climate" campaign implemented by the Misr El Kheir Foundation in cooperation with many parties, the management of the Rwaq Egypt Vision 2030 Forum held a discussion session entitled "An overview of the national strategy for climate change and the role of civil organizations to confront these changes" today, Sunday 8/28/2022, from five to eight. In the evening, hosted by Dr. Fajr Khamis Abdel Jawad.. Deputy Director of the Center of Excellence for Research and Applied Studies of Climate Change and Sustainable Development.
The discussion session addressed many important points included in the National Climate Change Strategy and its relationships with various sectors.
Dr. Fajr B explained that the various scientific reports, especially those issued by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, regarding the magnitude of the impacts of climate change and the expected scenarios for them, the Paris Agreement was adopted to strengthen global action to address climate change under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The agreement entered into force on November 4, 2016, and was ratified by the Egyptian Parliament in 2017
Hence Egypt is committed to providing its fair share of climate action as part of global action to address climate change. Taking into account Egypt's extreme vulnerability to climate change, adaptation to the negative impacts of climate change is an imperative necessity.
With this in mind, Egypt prepared its first National Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy in 2011, as well as the Low Emissions Development Strategy (LEDS) in 2018, which was prepared to be in line with the Sustainable Development Strategy SDS - Egypt’s Vision 2030. Despite this, there is still a gap to unify all aspects of climate change in one strategy to be a basic reference that ensures the integration of the climate change dimension into the general planning of all sectors in the country. Hence, the National Climate Change Council (NCCC) requested the development of the first comprehensive national climate change strategy for Egypt until 2050
What is stated in the broad outlines of the National Climate Change Strategy The National Climate Change Strategy can be viewed as a roadmap for achieving “Sub-Goal 3.1: Confronting the Challenges of Climate Change” within the framework of the updated Egypt Vision 2030 (SDS 2030). The National Climate Change Strategy will enable Egypt to plan and manage climate change at different levels in a way that supports the achievement of the country’s desired economic and development goals, following a flexible approach. And low emissions.
The National Climate Change Strategy places the well-being of the Egyptian citizen as a priority, which is in line with the first strategic goal within SDS 2030, as the vision of the strategy is:
Effectively address the effects and repercussions of climate change in a way that contributes to improving the quality of life of the Egyptian citizen, achieving sustainable development and sustainable economic growth, and preserving natural resources and ecosystems, while enhancing Egypt’s leadership at the international level in the field of climate change.
It is worth noting that implementing the national climate change strategy in Egypt requires the participation of all sectors of society, including non-governmental organizations and civil society, not just government agencies. The updated Egypt Vision 2030 emphasized the vital role of non-governmental organizations in raising awareness among citizens of important issues. Therefore, non-governmental organizations and civil society can contribute effectively to achieving the goals of the strategy by raising awareness about climate action and enhancing the values of volunteer work. For example, but not limited to, some civil society organizations engage in afforestation, environmental awareness in which the climate change dimension can be integrated, and other related initiatives.
More than ninety participants from different fields participated in the session via Zoom, and at the end of the session the door was opened for questions and inquiries and responses.
